Asian Geos Performed Deepwater Geotechnical Works off Sabah
Asian Geos ("AG") has recently carried out a challenging deepwater Seabed CPT and jumbo piston coring off Sabah, Malaysia. The 55kN ROSON Seabed CPT and NIOZ jumbo piston corer supplied by AG’s UK partner Gardline Geosciences were mobilized from the UK and Australia. All equipment including a 35-ton A-frame belonged to AG was installed onto a DP2 vessel MV Alhalya. The water depth in the area was approximately 1450m.
The 55kN rig is capable of carrying out in situ testing to 40m in water depths of up to 2,000 metres. The Cone Penetration Test is based on pushing an instrumented cone into the ground at a constant speed, with continuous measurement of the cone end resistance, the friction along the sleeve of the cone, and the pore water pressure. These measurements make it possible to evaluate accurately the ground conditions and stratigraphy over the penetrated depth. The sampling work was performed using the NIOZ jumbo piston corer.
The maximum penetrated depths for the Seabed CPT and Jumbo piston corer for this campaign was 30m and 11m, respectively.
Helmi Zulkawi, Asian Geos Group (“AG Group”) Managing Director comments: "This is our second deepwater project in offshore Sabah, the first being the environmental box coring carried out in 2005. The NIOZ jumbo corer will be permanently kept in Johor or Singapore as AG’s asset for future deepwater projects in this region. A 4-ton Seabed CPT and a Neptune 3000 coiled-type Seabed CPT will also be permanently deployed here as part AG Group’s expansion plans in meeting with growing clients’ deepwater and pipeline route requirements in this region.”
The AG Group has also identified a suitable DP vessel to support its deepwater geotechnical surface drilling requirements. The current planning is to have it ready by March 2012.
