Singapore, 4 May 2013 – In response to a geotechnical job requirement in nearshore Batangas, south of Luzon Island by a major E&P operator, the LCT Bima Sembilan is departing Singapore today en-route to the Philippines. The 46m Malaysian-flagged Landing Craft (LCT) is equipped with a motion-compensated marine drill rig AG-25, downhole CPT equipment and a four point mooring system to suit the local site condition which is from several metres of water to around 65m.

The work scope involves some 26 boreholes and PCPTs to maximum of 70m below seabed, with seismic CPT tests as part of the in-situ testing program. The spread also includes on-board soil testing laboratory with select soil samples would be expected to be sent to NGI, Norway for advanced testing.

The marine drill rig AG-25 was previously used by Asian Geos on offshore jobs in the Caspian Sea, the North Sea and in West Papua, Indonesia. The drill rig is mounted on a cantilevered platform over the side of the LCT to allow drilling to be carried out as close as possible to the shoreline.

Asian Geos has already six vessels on its current fleet namely the Malaysian-flagged MV Geos and DP Geoasia, MV Volans, MV Iyzco Supplier and two dedicated Malaysian-flagged geophysical survey vessels MV Dayang Sari and MV AG Surveyor. AG has also purchased a brand new self-operated drill barge to cater for nearshore and up to 60m water depth geotechnical drilling projects. This new vessel will be ready in August 2013.

“The biggest challenge for us on this particular project is on the remoteness of the site location. The LCT is therefore equipped with an extra accommodation module so that all drilling personnel can remain on-board during the field operation. For safety reasons, anchoring and drilling operations will only be carried out during daylight hours, said Project Manager, Syed Shahrul.

General Manager (Geotechnical Division), Abd Rasid Jaapar adds, “we continue to see drilling from an LCT as being the appropriate solution to client’s shallow water soil boring requirement, given the remoteness of the location and the shallow water depth. Over the last 7 years we have successfully deployed geotechnical spread using an LCT for similar projects in Indonesia, Malaysia and Indonesia.”
